Overview
Arete is an enterprise service organization focusing on mitigating and investigating cybercrimes such as ransomware and business email compromise events.
Our biggest challenge lies in building the first client-facing digital product for cybersecurity engagements.
Since 2022, I have led product design as the foundational designer, researcher, and design strategist.
INSURANCE CARRIERS can develop better policies, offer competitive guidance, and assess potential cyber risk when armed with timely incident response data.
How might we provide effective tools for our clients, Insurance Carriers, to better address cyber incident response?
Objective
The cyber security industry has been actively working on tools to help investigators understand a client's digital environment and networks.
Our primary objective was to develop and execute a product roadmap for a Minimum Viable Product.
Reporting directly to the VP of Product, I established user research standards and facilitated the first product requirements workshop.
Analyzing the data and research findings, I created a strategic roadmap, identifying essential features and prioritizing key elements for client engagement.
Design Decisions
As the first client-facing product, I created the end-to-end user experience from scratch.
I made decisions regarding the tech stack (choosing between React and Vue.js) and validated design ideas with our target user group—insurance carriers.
Additionally, I developed a design system for smooth handoff to engineers.
We primarily focused on a desktop solution while ensuring mobile responsiveness.
Based on insights from end users, we are enhancing the application to boost productivity for insurance carriers and incorporating data visualization capabilities.

User Flow
During the iterative process, I developed workflows, gathered feedback, established a design system, and prioritized tasks to create a roadmap.
I also created marketing visualizations based on the product design.
Furthermore, I set standards for engineering handoff, describing element states, key components, and design changes as we progressed through product development sprints.

Success Metrics
The initial release of the MVP engagements overview in Q1 2023 has proven successful by significantly reducing the time required for end users to gather information.
Clients can now conduct their cyber engagement analysis swiftly, without waiting for updates from the incident response team.
This has enabled efficient cross-functional communication within the incident response teams, consolidating their findings in a single location.
On average, team members have reported saving approximately 8 hours per day on researching and updating each other regarding specific engagements.
Impact
-
8+ hrs
Time Saved
We were able to note an average of 8 hours of time saved per work week per person. Analysis completed for 180 employees by implementing the platform.
Tremendous Cost Savings!
-
150
Reach
Developed messaging and pitch decks for our CEO to present and go-to-market. Reached over 150 cyber companies with our latest developments.
-
30
Unique Users
In the first month of launching the platform, we gained adoption across several insurance teams - amounting to 30 unique users each week and steadily increasing.
Next Steps
Next steps in this product are to expand our reach to the next level of targeted user groups.
By dialing in additional workflows for internal and external users, we would be able to provide more value to clients and to the incident response arena. I’d like to get more detailed in providing intelligible analytics and addressing secure, mobile workflows.
